Terminology

  • [[DRI]]: Directly Responsible Individual — the one who is driving the initiative and working to completion. Read more on [[DRI]].

  • RAPID Framework: Recommend-Agree-Perform-Input-Decision (Source: Bain & Co.)

    • R Person who recommends an initiative.
    • A People who needs to agree for the initiative to be successful. (but one can disagree, and commit, if the decision has been made)
    • P People who needs to perform/execute on the initiative and will be held accountable.
    • I People who provides input to the Recommend
    • D Decision maker

DRI-RAPID Framework

The combination of DRI & RAPID can be useful to drive a project forward and increase clarity on who to work with in what capacity.

  • DRI A single person who owns the initiative and drives the process towards completion.
  • R Person who recommends such initiative. Might be same as DRI, but not always.
  • A People who needs to agree for the initiative to be successful. (but one can disagree, and commit, if the decision has been made)
  • P People who needs to perform/execute on the initiative and will be held accountable. Similar to R, may be same person as DRI, but not always.
  • I People who provides input to the DRI
  • D Decision maker of the initiative. Usually DRI and/or manager for team-level, executive member for department-level initiative, and CFO & the leader of people & culture if company-wide initiative along with the CEO. (Depends on the scale of impact to people, process, and budget)

** Note:* In some cases, a person can be part of multiple groups (DRI can be R, P, sometimes even D)

How to use DRI-RAPID Framework

  • For any initiatives that require cross-functional collaboration or complex decision making, define DRI-RAPID matrix.
  • Then start going through the framework to get to a decision and execute!
