(From Daniel Pink's Drive + a few others)
The goal is to learn and maintain what makes you (and others) to feel engaged and motivated.

Intrinsic factors: RAMP (Relatedness, autonomy, mastery, purpose)

  • Examples: Learning, curiosity, fun, meaningfulness, growth, etc.
  • Intrinsic factors can last a lifetime and almost always trump the results driven by extrinsic factors.

Extrinsic factors: Incentives, consequences, rewards

  • Examples: Money, fame, position, appraisal, followers, etc.
  • Extrinsic factors are good for increasing repetitive, simple tasks. The effect don’t last and backfires upon removal of the factors.
