(From Daniel Pink's Drive + a few others)
The goal is to learn and maintain what makes you (and others) to feel engaged and motivated.
Intrinsic factors: RAMP (Relatedness, autonomy, mastery, purpose)
- Examples: Learning, curiosity, fun, meaningfulness, growth, etc.
- Intrinsic factors can last a lifetime and almost always trump the results driven by extrinsic factors.
Extrinsic factors: Incentives, consequences, rewards
- Examples: Money, fame, position, appraisal, followers, etc.
- Extrinsic factors are good for increasing repetitive, simple tasks. The effect donβt last and backfires upon removal of the factors.
